Wiltshire Police have issued an appeal for witnesses after a 97-year-old woman died and three other people suffered serious injuries in a collision on the M4 early yesterday (July 26) morning.

Just after 2am a Vauxhall Zafira heading east between junctions 15 (Swindon East) and 14 (Hungerford) near the Membury services is believed to have left the carriageway on the near side, struck the barrier and come to a rest in the centre lane.

The stationary vehicle was then in collision with an Audi A4 also travelling east.

A 97-year-old woman, who was the front seat passenger in the Audi, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Audi driver, a 60-year-old man from South East London, sustained life changing injuries. His back seat passenger, a 59-year-old woman, was seriously injured. They were taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon where their condition is said to be serious but stable.

The Zafira driver, a man from West London, sustained life changing injuries and was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The M4 was closed for six hours whilst an investigation was carried out by the Tri Force Specialist Operations Roads Policing Unit.

PC George Rabczak said: “We are keen to hear from anyone travelling between junctions 15 and 14 who witnessed the collision which sadly led to the death of an elderly lady and left three people with serious injuries.”

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call Wiltshire Police on 101 and ask for PC Rabczak.
