THE current police and crime commissioner has won the backing of the county in the first round of voting.
Independent candidate Martin Surl, a former policeman, has received 57,447 votes compared to 46,965 for Conservative Will Windsor-Clive and 33,825 for Labour’s Barry Kirby.
Overall 143,364 ballot papers were returned, a 30.5 per cent overall turnout. In the Cotswolds the turnout was 23.4 per cent.
As no candidate secured an overall majority the race will now go to a second round, where voters’ second preferred candidate will be totted up and added to to one of the three's tally.
In the last election in 2012, Martin Surl came second in the first vote but went on to win in the second round.
