HUNDREDS of ladies in pink descended on Cirencester Park on Thursday evening to help battle cancer in Race for Life 2016.

Over 750 women took part in the Cirencester event in a bid to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK.

The rain mostly held off and there were no damp spirits as runners bedecked in pink t-shirts, tutus, and even fairy wings made their way around the 5k and 10k courses.

While many participants were experienced runners there were plenty of newcomers taking part too, including Monica Marshfield, 47, Jo Sykes, 42, and Liz Hall, 36, who said: “We’re running for too many people to mention but it’s just such a good cause and it’s our first time and we did it.”

Amongst the more experienced runners were winner of the 10k race, Michelle Leighton, 44, an event manager for Cancer Research UK, who was running for her dad, step-dad, step-mum, and uncle.

“I’m a club runner but I didn't expect to come and win,” she said. “I’m shocked and very pleased obviously.”

She went on to say how wonderful the cause is. She said: “The fact it's women only means there's a lot of people here who are older or who wouldn't take part in a competitive race, so although its a serious message and we’re trying to raise money for a good cause we still encourage people to have fun and enjoy the day.”

Last year, Cirencester Race for Life raised a massive £72,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Kelly Rumble, Cirencester Race for Life event manager, hoped with help from sponsors this year it can be even more.

“We are so grateful to everyone who took part in Race for Life,” she said. “It was a fantastic day, full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter as women joined forces to conquer cancer.”

“Now, I’m asking everyone who took part - and all the friends, family and colleagues who pledged to support them - to transform their passion into progress by returning the money they’ve raised as soon as possible.”
