IT IS very difficult to understand the point that TJ Lees is trying to make in the letter of September 1 but two things are clear: there is a reaction to the demolition of the old hospital and an attack on the Cirencester Bowling Club for having a town centre site.

On the first point, anyone who has seen the condition of the building and its present appearance would have to agree that The Old Hospital is hardly an asset to be protected.

The second shows an ignorance, which needs to be rectified.

Cirencester Bowling Club has been established in the town for 86 years, and has a playing membership of over 100, who, weather permitting, can be on the greens at any time.

Most of the members take part in friendly games with teams, not only from Gloucestershire but even as far afield as Berkshire.

We compete in four leagues, and have members who play for the county.

Most people would consider us a very vibrant asset to the town, rather than “a small number of people once or twice a week to play bowls.”

I would also point out that we own the site and give business to local firms, as we are an asset to the town, rather than an encumbrance.

Finally, the Abbey Grounds are an attractive, special part of the town centre and the character of the area would be completely changed if a bowling green were placed there.

I am surprised that TJ Lees could not appreciate that.
