AN EX-ARMY officer will have the best seat in the house for the Olympic torch relay which starts this weekend.

Pete Edgington, who is an ambulance driver for The George Veterinary Group in Malmesbury, is set to drive behind all 8,000 torch bearers through 1,000 communities across the UK from May 19 to July 27.

The 51-year-old grandad from Ampney Crucis said he could not believe his luck when he was chosen as a driver for the relay's convoy commander, who is in charge of a team of 360 escorts for the event.

Pete said he had toured Afghanistan with the Army’s 47 Air Despatch Squadron Royal Logistic Corps but driving through Cirencester on May 23 would be his proudest moment.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and to do it through your hometown is just a fantastic and unforgettable experience," he said.

The former Cirencester Deer Park pupil said he was also excited to get a unique view of 700 famous personalities due to take part in the relay. But he added that because of tight security he had to keep his lips sealed until their identities were officially announced.

It is believed that a mystery celebrity may be carrying the torch through Cirencester next week along with Cirencester Deer Park pupil Jake Ashton and Malmesbury artist Hilary Cox.

"I don’t know where or when certain celebrities will be carrying the torch," Pete added. "But I’ve been told of several names involved, including royalty and high profile sports stars."

Despite Pete's leading role in the 70-day relay he will join the majority of the world, who will be watching the games from the comfort of their armchair because he has not got tickets to any of the events.
