IN response to a letter in last week’s Standard criticising our MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown and his views on the EU.

I certainly am no lover of Mr Clifton-Brown as he himself would tell you; neither am I a lover of Boris Johnson, Gove or IDS, but everyone in this country, irrespective of class or party politics, was entitled to a free vote in the referendum.

This is democracy, if you don’t like the way the result goes, tough.

The result of the referendum for the Cotswolds was a very close thing in favour of Remain, in fact just a spit in the ocean.

With all the hype before the referendum, who was to know which way the vote would go?

If Mr Clifton-Brown had conducted a survey of his constituents before the vote and he himself then gone along with the majority, that would certainly not have been democratic on his part and more likely than not would have been the wrong decision.

Like him or not, at least he had the bottle to state what his views were.
