LESLEY Brain, in her July 14 column stated: “Our democratically elected Prime Minister chose to go to the electorate and, in the name of the same shaky democracy, ask if we wanted to stay in the EU.”
In the UK, we do not elect a Prime Minister.
We vote for a local MP, taking into account the manifesto pledges set out by their political party.
The leader of the winning political party then becomes the prime minister (provided of course he or she has won the seat of their own constituency).
The EU referendum was included in the Conservative manifesto.
However, it could not be implemented until agreed by parliament.
Which it was, with a healthy cross-party majority.
In the referendum, all those eligible to vote could do so and every single vote counted.
I myself voted ‘Remain’ but the overall majority was for Brexit.
In a democracy it is the majority vote that takes precedence.
Nothing ‘shaky’ about it.
