I have to disagree strongly with Professor Peter Jacob’s letter on September 8.
Cirencester town centre has been in need of refurbishment and improvement for several years and the current works are long overdue.
When complete I believe the centre of town will be a more attractive and welcoming place.
During the work it has been noticeable that traffic speeds are much lower through the market place, which is a welcome benefit for pedestrians and I believe this will remain the case when the new scheme is completed.
The new road surfaces appear high quality and are, in my view, very attractive.
I hope they remain so and are not ruined, as previous pavement works have been, by heavy delivery lorries parking on the pavements.
The town council should be congratulated for upgrading finding the money to upgrade our town centre and make it more pedestrian-friendly.
Perhaps the next stage could be demolition of the old hospital eyesore and creation of additional parking.
