THERE were mixed results for Cirencester & District League clubs in the County Cup competitions played at the weekend, and sadly none are now left in the Minor Cup.

Siddington Sports lost 2-0 at Kings Reserves and Minchinhampton Town were beaten at home by Cashes Green Reserves 5-2. Jose Bowman scored both Minchinhampton’s goals.

In the Primary Cup, four Division Two sides progressed. Siddington Sports Veterans were involved in a close game against Worrall Hill before emerging as 3-2 winners with goals from Jack Baverstock, Dennis King and an own goal.

South Cerney Reserves’ Nathan Littler struck four goals in a 6-2 away victory at Saintbridge, with Matt Garrett and Harley Coram also scoring. CHQ beat Hatherley 4-2, and Stratton Utd progressed when they were given a walkover after Viney St Swithins Reserves withdrew from the competition.

Minchinhampton Town Reserves were the only side who failed to progress when unable to field a side at St Briavels.

In the delayed Mills-Roberts Cup tie, Blunsdon shocked previously unbeaten Down Ampney by knocking them out of the competition with a 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Leon Reason and Billy Lord.

In Division One, Intel moved into second place in the table after a 3-1 win over Oaksey, which brought the visitor’s’ recent good run to an end. Matt Gumm with two and Adam O’Bree gave Intel a 3-0 lead before a second-half strike from Jake Pinnell reduced the arrears.

CHQ Utd needed a last-gasp winner at Stroud FC to take three points and move them into third place in the table. In a competitive encounter, veteran Steve Reeves gave CHQ the lead when the home keeper let a header squeeze under his body. Ben Saunders rifled in an excellent 25-yard goal to put CHQ in control, but Kirk Wilkinson pulled a goal back before half-time.

A disputed penalty scored by Jamie Morse extended CHQ’s lead, but Stroud did not give up and deservedly levelled through Vaughan Wilkinson and Joshua Lyon. The match was deep into added-on time when Troy Weaven’s low cross was met by the sliding Reeves to the heartbreak of the home side, and there was barely time to restart.

Bibury Reserves lost ground on the leading pack when they were beaten 4-2 at home by Highworth Town Dev, for whom Brandon Fenwick scored a hat-trick and Jamie Carpenter got the other. The Beeches recorded their first win of the season thanks to goals from Sam Clarke and Joe Gardiner in a 2-1 win over Malmesbury Vics Res.

There were just two games in Division Two, and Wroughton Reserves continue to look strong, winning 6-2 at Sherston. The visitors’ scorers were Daryl Chambers (2), Lewis Dancer, Andy Lynham, Steve Leighfield and Steven Nesbitt. Will Barras got both of Sherston’s goals.

Oaksey Reserves continued their progress up the table with a 2-0 home win over Minety thanks to goals from Gareth Jones and Sam Munton.
