CIRENCESTER Golf Club head pro Ed Goodwin and captain Mark Woodhead finished an honourable third in the Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro/Captain Challenge at the Antalya Golf Club in Turkey.

The Cirencester duo shot two rounds of 69 for a four-under par total of 138.

But they were up against some scintillating golf from the top two pairings in the £25,000 tournament.

Jason Levermore of the Channels Golf Club in Essex and his captain Neil Hutchinson blitzed around in the Mediterranean sunshine for a total of 12-under in the 36-hole event which gave them a five-shot winning margin over Ashburnham’s duo of Martin Stimson (pro) and Martin Hale, who did their utmost to pile on the pressure with a closing round of five-under 66.

Goodwin, a regular competitor on the PGA West regional circuit, was delighted with the pair’s display, which also secured him a cheque for £2,900.

“It’s been a great week and I’m just really happy with the outcome as I’d have taken third if I’d been offered it at the start of the tournament,” said Goodwin.

“This is the biggest tournament I’ve played in as a professional and just really enjoyed the experience.
"It’s been great for the captain, and the club have been very supportive of us. I’m pleased we’ve put in a good performance.”

This is the second year the tournament has been sponsored by Golfplan Insurance, which saw more than 500 clubs across the country compete to reach the 10-team final played over the PGA Sultan Course at Antalya.
