SOUTH CERNEY clinched the Division One title of the M4 Karting Cirencester & District league by securing the point they needed in a 2-2 draw with defending champions and closest rivals CHQ United in front of a bumper crowd.

It is a credit to both sides that they took the title to the final game of the season, CHQ having set up the title decider by beating Stroud FC 4-1 in midweek.

Knowing that only a win was good enough, CHQ started the stronger and Cerney looked nervous, but once they had settled they took the lead when Kieron Jones headed in from a free kick.

They looked to be well on the way to the title when Matt Lamond took advantage of some hesitancy in the CHQ defence to calmly slot home a second. However, just before half-time, a quickly taken direct free kick from Ben Saunders caught Cerney napping.

After the break, CHQ pressed strongly for further goals, but the Cerney defence was solid, although they did start to look a little nervy after Ben Saunders headed the equaliser with 15 minutes to go.

There followed a few half chances for CHQ and a couple of crosses played dangerously CIREN LEAGUE across the six-yard box, but Cerney held firm to clinch the Division One trophy, presented at the end by league secretary Dennis Young.

In other games, Oaksey and Poulton drew 1-1 with goals from Phil Hall for the home side and John Dawson for the visitors. Both sides have had good seasons but will be hoping to mount a stronger title challenge next time around. In midweek, Oaksey had picked up a point in a 0-0 draw with Malmesbury Vics Reserves.

Siddington Sports and Stroud FC played their final game of the season with Stroud winning 5-3. Craig Worgan and Tyrell Edmunds both scored twice for the winners, with the other goalscorer being Vaughan Wilkinson. Jamie Axford, Luke Daley and Kieron Wickens responded for Siddington.

In the high-scoring game of the day, Bibury Reserves beat Minch Town 16-5.

In Division Two, Siddington Sports Veterans stunned table-topping Wroughton Town Reserves by scoring twice in the first five minutes through Dennis King and Jon Reeves.

The hosts never recovered, eventually going down 3-0 with King getting his second of the game.

The result now means that Siddington can win the title by gaining just a point in their final game against Tetbury Town Thirds next Saturday.

Over the next 10 days, the Veterans can crown a remarkable season by winning four trophies as they contest the finals of the Primary County Cup, Mills-Roberts Cup and the Junior Charities Cup.

Siddington had set up the ‘title decider’ with Wroughton by gaining two important victories in midweek, beating Minety 2-0 and South Cerney Reserves 4-0.

Cerney also lost 2-1 at Minety to give the winners a rare victory and lift them off the foot of the table. Tetbury Town III slipped back to the bottom after they lost 4-2 at Down Ampney and then 6-1 at home to Stratton United. Stratton also had a good home win 2-0 over Oaksey Reserves.

Ashton Keynes suffered a rare home defeat, losing 3-1 at home to CHQ United Reserves, and Oaksey Reserves and Blunsdon FC shared the points in a 4-4 draw. Minchinhampton Town Reserves look to be finishing the season strongly and they they beat Minety 3-1.
