JESSICA Ennis-Hill and Usain Bolt have uplifted us all by winning gold medals at the World Athletic Championships.

Sport is nothing if it is not genuine and joyful, and Jessica and Usain are truly both.

Now a proud Mum, Jessica for all the right reasons, retains her winning smile. Usain had to overcome an opponent who should not have been there, due to two convictions for drug taking.

Lord Coe vowed to root out all the drug takers in athletics. Could he have two better role models than these two champions in pointing the way forward to others?

Australian Michael Klinger is such a model for our emerging young cricketers.

The news he has signed for two more years is marvellous news for our county.

He loves both Bristol and our club, and thinks he could be a part of something special as the side improves.

With Lancashire and Surrey to be promoted next year’s second division will be more open. It could be Gloucestershire’s year.

I have better news regarding the first class fixture list for 2017. The traditionalists are digging in!

There could well be fourteen matches in the Championship, not twelve, and the T.20 competition won’t be played in a short summer window, but over a much longer period using Friday nights as the regular slot.

Gate receipts for Friday nights are excellent and this may sway the thinking.

The Championship game against Surrey started in predictable fashion, with the home side struggling.

However, full marks to Gareth Roderick and to James Fuller.

Gareth held the innings together and James hit a rigorous forty-six, and then bowled a fine opening spell which deserved several wickets.

In such form he could win us the quarter final against Hampshire on Wednesday.

Michael Klinger should also be fit, and will be just the man required.

Outstanding and outscoring everyone in this seasons two limited overs competition, Michael should have been included in the Australian squad for the one dayers against England.

His omission is astounding and I understand he is bitterly disappointed.

All Gloucestershire should sympathise with him.

We should also sympathise with Cirencester Town Cricket Club.

Re-organisation of the league system within the country will deny them the promotion they deserve.

Forest Green Rovers are not having mixed fortunes as the National League table shows.

If such knowledge has eluded you, it is played five, won five.

The club sits proudly at the top of the table.

On the weekend, they deservedly beat a generally lack lustre Lincoln City, who are known as The Imps.

I think the name is short for impoverished as their creative play was non-existent.

They are the first one of the many ex-league teams finding difficult to get back, and now the questions are being asked of Forest Green if it could really happen?

The team is well set up and will certainly challenge for a top spot come May.

Mrs Light and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit on Saturday, dining well and enjoying a good game.
