WE’VE got a great bunch of lads but at the end of the day they are part-time, non-league footballers and they are susceptible to poor performances.

We have had two very good seasons but this campaign it has been more hit and miss, drawing only three games which tells you that we have not been grinding out wins when playing below par.

When we are poor we can be very poor, but the disappointing 5-2 home defeat to St Neots is one of only about three very bad displays.

We asked for a reaction against a side (Chesham) who had gone five games unbeaten at home and had just hit five past third-placed Dunstable, and we got one.

We set ourselves up differently, looking for a bit more stability away from home with two banks of four and with Ross (Langworthy) playing in and around Charlie Griffin.

We went without wingers, but with Matt Liddiard and Ollie playing widest of the midfield four. Lidds always gives you that great energy, this time playing up and down the channels and Ollie put in his best ever display in a Town shirt.

You could see in the first five minutes they were all champing at the bit to put the wrongs of the previous game right.

We did not capitalise with the wind behind us in the first half but to score three second-half goals puts it right up there with the best of our away performances this season.

When we had a base to build on we looked a completely different side. We soon put the game to bed after the opening goal and our game management at the end was excellent.

We will go with the same XI at Dorchester on Tuesday night. Jamie Reid will still not be ready having injured himself in training last week.

We will stick with Development keeper Josh Langley in goal.

Oxford United’s Jack Stevens has signed forms for us but we are now going to see how Josh does and use him for the foreseeable future.

On reflection we should have gone with Josh from the start when Glyn Garner left, promoting from within.

Josh did well against Chesham, looked assured and kicked well. Mind you, it might have been different if the back four had played like they did against St Neots.

On Saturday they had sorted themselves out and like the rest of the team wanted to erase the disappointment of the previous game.

Fifteen of the squad had a team bonding session at Rajdoot in Cirencester a couple of days before Chesham and there is a great team spirit among them. It’s good to see them getting together socially.

I’m not sure if it was the curry night but they were definitely running around much faster against Chesham!

If you take St Neots out of the equation we have generally played well since Boxing Day, winning at Bedworth, Merthyr and Chesham and perhaps being unlucky not to get something at Kings Lynn. Hopefully we can keep that momentum going at Dorchester tonight.
