SWINDON Town couldn’t capitalise on their weekend win as a second-half comeback was extinguished by two Northampton goals in six minutes on Tuesday night.

Northampton got off to a flying start and took the lead in the seventh minute through a Harry Beautyman strike.

Swindon played some good football but failed to finish off their chances. Shortly after the hour mark, Sean Murray scored his first Town goal and for a while it looked like Swindon might complete the comeback.

However it wasn’t to be as John-Joe O’Toole headed the Cobblers back into the lead in the 76th minute before Kenji Gorre wrapped up all three points in the 82nd minute with a simple finish.

After the match, manager Luke Williams said: “I thought we had a good chance at that point (after the equaliser) to go on and win the game because it looked like we had momentum behind us and it looked like we had some new energy.

“We got what we deserved unfortunately in the end because we didn’t defend with conviction, with desire to make a tackle and it was too easy to beat people and too easy to find space inside our box.

“Our opposition were the opposite. They were fantastic in the box, they were aggressive, it was very, very difficult to get past somebody, it was very difficult to find any space inside the box and they were fantastic.

“We need to learn from them because they are a fantastic team. They make it incredibly difficult for you to score and when they get a soft chance against us they take it."

It was the Robin’s third straight home loss in the league and pressure is beginning to mount on the side to start picking up more points after a September that has seen Town get just four points from a possible 18.

Town were made to look strong on Saturday as they picked up a 2-0 win against a weak Oldham Athletic.

Swindon’s first goal was a masterpiece in patience and teamwork with 17 passes in the build-up before John Goddard’s pass sliced through Oldham’s defence and Jon Obika coolly put Town ahead.

As fantastic as the goal was, it is just as frustrating for the fans who can see the potential in their side. Swindon aren’t taking enough of their chances and are being left to pay for their defensive mistakes too often.
